Keeping positive

Keeping positive

Our upcoming event (albeit a virtual one!) on 18 November focusses on ‘purpose, positivity and practicalities’ and we’re looking forward to hearing how fellow communicators have adapted and grown in a challenging time.

I don’t know about you, but it’s been hard these last few months to keep the old chin up and carry on as ‘normal’. Every day still has something positive in it…but some days it feels like you just have to look a little harder to find it. So, I started thinking about some tips on how to keep the positivity up.

Share positivity around you

Try and do something kind every day. For me that’s about helping a friend or neighbour out with something they might be struggling with. Or simply thanking someone who may not be expecting it.

Challenge the negative thinking

Ask yourself ‘is there another, more positive way I could view this situation?’. It’s not easy to always be the optimist, but once a day stop and think about something that you’re struggling which could be made into something more positive.

Smile

I know it sounds very simplistic, but it does help to brighten up the mood sometimes and it can help other people who aren’t feeling too great about their day. Think of people, moments, or things that bring you some kind of comfort or happiness and try to express your gratitude at least once a day.

Congratulate yourself

Often, we concentrate on what we haven't done as opposed to what we have done. This is a negative way to look at things - to keep the positivity flowing, we need to acknowledge what we have done well.

Treat yourself

It’s important that you take a step back sometimes and treat yourself to something special. Self-care is all the rage these days - for good reason. And, it doesn’t always have to involve a nice soak in the bath with candles and a glass of something - although that sounds lovely, too!

Above all, be kind to yourself and remember that you are doing fantastic things!
